If you think you may have low testosterone, we are here to help. At Harley Street MD, we have several testosterone replacement medications that will help you get your health back on track. Oral testosterone supplies the testosterone in a pill.
Hormone replacement therapy is only available in the UK by prescription and may not be covered by the NHS. When you come into our clinic, we offer a comprehensive package that includes blood tests to assess your overall health and review your testosterone levels.
Do I Need Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT)?
Low testosterone generally affects older men because the body’s natural supply of testosterone declines with age. Some men can feel debilitating changes to their everyday life from low testosterone, while others have no negative effects. Men who are experiencing any of the following symptoms should speak to their doctor to see if they have low testosterone:
- Loss of libido
- Erectile dysfunction
- Changes in mood or depression
- Loss of cognitive function and brain fog
- Inability to maintain muscle mass
- Weight gain
- Hair loss
- Sleep troubles and insomnia
- Reduced bone density
- Fatigue and low energy.
Why Is Testosterone Prescribed?
Men with low testosterone may have a condition called hypogonadism, where the body doesn’t produce enough natural testosterone. Testosterone treatments for this condition come in an oral prescription, injection or a transdermal patch or gel. Some men with low testosterone who haven’t been diagnosed with hypothyroidism may choose to have testosterone replacement therapy if they feel it will benefit them. Some side effects and risks come with TRT, so you’ll want to discuss the options and risk factors with your doctor.
What Are the Benefits of Oral Testosterone?
Every man experiences differing results from testosterone replacements. Many men say that the benefits outweigh the risks as their quality of life is greatly improved by regulating and increasing low testosterone levels. Some of the benefits you may experience from TRT are:
- Better body composition by increasing muscle mass and decreasing fat mass
- Increased muscle strength and energy
- Improved sexual desire and libido
- Increased efficacy of PDE5i (i.e. Viagra, Cialis, Levitra)
- Reduced fatigue and the feeling of exhaustion
- Less anxiety and bad moods
- Improved bone density
- Increased self-confidence and self-esteem.
Does Oral Testosterone Have Side Effects?
There are risks and side effects involved with every medication and you should discuss these with a doctor to make sure you understand both the risks and benefits. When used safely with an experienced doctor, we can track your progress and mitigate the side effects you may experience with testosterone replacement therapy. Side effects include an increased risk of a heart attack and an increase in blood pressure. The bioavailability of oral testosterone is considerably lower than an injection due to first-pass metabolism, where the medication is broken down in the digestive system. Your doctor may consider transdermal or intramuscular injections as an alternative.
What Kind of Oral Testosterone Are Offered?
Restandol® is licensed to be prescribed for patients with androgen deficiency and for the prevention and management of osteoporosis. Testosterone is oil soluble and, therefore, should be taken after a meal to increase absorption. Half of the daily dose should be taken in the morning and the rest in the evening. If an uneven number of capsules are required per day, a larger number of capsules should be taken in the morning. You’ll discuss with the doctor if this method of TRT is right for you.
