At Harley Street MD, we offer several types of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) to help you get your health and wellbeing back on track. If you think you may have low testosterone, it can hurt your everyday life. The three methods we offer are oral testosterone taken in a pill form; transdermal testosterone that supplies the testosterone via the skin with a patch or gel; and intramuscular testosterone, which we will discuss in-depth below.

Do I Need Testosterone Replacement Therapy?

If you are experiencing the symptoms of low testosterone — low libido, erectile dysfunction, mood changes or depression, brain fog, inability to maintain muscle mass, hair loss, weight gain, insomnia, fatigue — you’ll want to speak with your doctor to see if TRT is right for you. Low testosterone generally affects older men over 40, as it’s normal for natural testosterone to decline with age. Some men may not have the negative consequences of low testosterone, while others can feel its debilitating effects. You may find it a challenge to get testosterone replacement therapy covered by the NHS, so we are here to help make sure you get the attention you need.

What Is Intramuscular Testosterone?

Intramuscular testosterone is taken via an injection shot into the muscle and is the most prescribed method of TRT. Nebido is the most common brand used for a long-lasting testosterone injection. The drug is formulated to allow sustained release of testosterone in the circulatory system once injected into the muscle. The muscle serves as a depot, and therefore, each 1,000mg injection will last up to 14 weeks — making this method of testosterone replacement therapy a lot more convenient and affordable.

Intramuscular testosterone is administered in our office or self-administered via injection with one loading dose six weeks after the initial injection, followed by intervals of 10 to 14 weeks. We will track your progress to make sure the injection intervals are optimal for your personalised needs.

Is Intramuscular Testosterone Suitable for Me?

If you have testosterone deficiency syndrome or experience symptoms of low testosterone, then testosterone injections might be suitable for you. You’ll first want to see a doctor and get the necessary blood tests to check where your testosterone levels are. The purpose of hormone replacement therapy is to help your body regulate and produce a healthy amount of testosterone. You’ll discuss the different options with your doctor to find which method is best for you. The use of TRT might not be suitable if you have a diagnosed or suspected carcinoma of the prostate, if you have past and present liver tumours, or heart problems and hypersensitivity to the active substance. Nebido is not licensed in those younger than 18 years of age.

What Results Can I See from Testosterone Replacement Therapy?

Many positive effects happen when your testosterone is regulated to provide your body with all the hormones it needs for healthy function.

  • Better body composition with increased muscle mass and decreased fat
  • Increased muscle strength
  • Improved sexual desire and libido
  • Reduced fatigue and feeling of exhaustion
  • Better sleep
  • Improved mood and self-confidence
  • Reduced risk of certain diseases.

Pharmacokinetic studies have shown that TRT helps maintain testosterone levels within the therapeutic range — therefore minimising the negative side effects associated with low testosterone. Most patients will achieve a normal testosterone range within two to three consecutive injections.

What Are the Side Effects of Testosterone Injections?

The most frequent side effect is injection site tenderness — this can last for 48 hours. Development of acne is a possibility but usually mild and transient. Other side effects that would be monitored throughout your TRT are increased blood count, changes in cholesterol profile, increased PSA levels and symptoms of prostatism. Your full blood count, PSA, liver function test and cholesterol levels will be checked periodically to minimise the risk of complication.

We look forward to helping you gain your vitality and health back.

‘I blast and cruise for years. When my haematocrit level went up, my GP did not seem to care and I couldn’t possibly wait for weeks to see a specialist. I am so lucky that to have found Harley Street MD through my research and it is the only clinic I have found that accept self-referral for therapeutic venesection due to AAS use.
