What Causes Wrinkles?

Wrinkles are a completely natural byproduct of the ageing process, but there are other factors that contribute to their appearance, too. Here are some of the main causes of fine lines and wrinkles:

Ageing

No matter how good your skincare routine is, everyone’s skin ages, so it’s impossible to avoid wrinkles entirely. Fine lines and wrinkles form as you get older because collagen production slows down over time, which causes the skin to lose elasticity. Your skin also becomes thinner and drier as you age.

Exposure to Ultraviolet Rays

You’ve no doubt heard about the importance of wearing sun protection factor (SPF). Besides protecting you against sun damage and cancer, wearing SPF daily can also slow visible signs of ageing, as sun exposure accounts for up to 80 percent of these. Ultraviolet (UV) rays break down the skin’s protective tissue, which makes it sag and wrinkle over time.

Smoking

Did you know that smoking prevents the production of collagen and reduces oxygen supply to the skin? There are several ways that smoking can exacerbate wrinkling, from the repetitive action of pursing the lips to the narrowing of the blood vessels caused by nicotine. In short, avoid smoking if you want to stay healthy and maintain a youthful look.

Repeated Facial Expressions

If you tend to squint, frown or even smile a lot, the muscles used can cause skin cells to be squeezed and wrinkles to form. Of course, we’re not suggesting you avoid smiling, but for some people with expressive faces, deeper wrinkle formation is just a fact of life.

Stress

Stress is bad for your physical and mental health in several ways, but you may not have known it can have a negative impact on the skin. Stress increases cortisol levels, reducing the skin’s ability to hold moisture, and elevated blood sugar may also damage the skin’s collagen and elastin fibres.

Lack of Sleep

You know getting enough sleep is essential for good health, but were you aware it can also keep your skin smooth and plump? While you sleep, toxins are flushed from the body to keep your skin at its healthiest, plus, a good night’s sleep will help with your skin’s ability to stay hydrated.

Dry Skin

Dry skin can be uncomfortable, itchy and add years onto your skin, which is why skin hydration is so important. Moisturising regularly is key to keeping your skin supple.

Sugar

Consuming excessive amounts of sugar can lead to premature ageing due to the way it’s ingested by the body. When you eat sugar, it goes through a process known as glycation, binding to proteins in the body such as collagen and elastin. This binding can weaken essential support structures in the skin and lead to the formation of wrinkles.

How Our Wrinkle Reduction Treatment Hides Wrinkles

Although there are small changes you can make to your lifestyle to slow the formation of wrinkles, they are ultimately a normal part of ageing and no one can escape the natural effects that happen to the face over time. Cosmetic treatments, however, can slow the ageing process and prevent deep lines from forming. Wrinkle relaxing injections like Botox are one of the most popular and effective anti-ageing treatments to stop wrinkles in their tracks by paralysing the facial muscles, smoothing out lines and stopping them from getting deeper over time.

Boy-tox is a quick procedure that achieves a very subtly enhanced look while maintaining all your facial expressions and stature. We inject small amounts of Botox in areas where you need it most, like the elevens between the eyebrows, across the forehead and around the eyes to soften crow’s feet. We may use a combination of Botox and dermal fillers to help reach your anti-ageing goals. At your consultation, we will discuss your desired results and the different options available before advising what will work best for you.

How Dermal Fillers Reduce Wrinkles and Refresh Your Look

We also use dermal fillers for various parts of the face to create an overall appealing and symmetrical look. Dermal fillers made from hyaluronic acid (HA) help soften fine lines and wrinkles but also add more suppleness to the skin. The magic of HA is that it hydrates the skin on a deeper level and increases its elasticity. Dermal fillers can be used to treat far more than the three facial areas we target with Botox. Men may want to improve insecurities in the face other than wrinkles, including:

– Replenishing lost volume in cheeks and under the eyes

– Improving eyebrow arches

– Softening bunny lines around the nose

– Plumping lips

– Altering a cobblestone/dimpled/golf ball chin

– Smoothing smoker’s line around the mouth

– Making the jawline more chiselled

– Fixing nose imperfections

How Long Does Wrinkle Reduction Treatment Last?

Our anti-wrinkle treatment is non-invasive and takes around 30 minutes to complete, so you can even go back to work the same day. The use of facial fillers and Botox will not permanently alter your appearance, but clients appreciate the results they provide without the need for more invasive treatments. Botox typically lasts around six months and fillers around twelve months or longer depending on various factors like genetics, lifestyle, the type of filler and treatment area. Most of our clients come in once a year for top-ups to maintain their youthful appearance. Get in touch for a consultation if you are considering anti-ageing wrinkle reduction treatment.
